Google My Business Action Plan
Google My Business Posts
This is a pretty new (and AWESOME) feature on GMB. Google is still updating it and adding more features.
Think of posting on GMB as a Social Media platform for your business. But way better then Facebook or LinkedIn!
Surprisingly, there are still many businesses missing out and not taking advantage of this. CRAZY!
They are WELL worth the effort! Do this!

PLUS, doing post qualifies you for Googles “Post Mentions” which are call outs under your Map Pack listing.

Its NOT a guarantee that you will see it there, but if you do post, its a good chance you will start to see them.
Not only can potential customers quickly see your business’ name, address and phone number, but they can also see photos of your business, read online reviews, find a description about your company, complete a transaction (like book an appointment) and see other information that grabs a searcher’s attention — all without them even visiting your website.
Types of Post
There are 5 distinct post types available.
Most businesses simply use the What’s New and Offers Post. However, understanding the other post types will help you determine if they fit within your business to help you to engage more with your customers.
The 5 Post Types:
What’s New (Most Used)
Use for sharing general business updates, what’s happening at the company, new team additions, blog posts, or to showcase customer reviews and testimonials.
Events
Events posts can be used to promote any event. It can be something in-store, part of your neighborhood, or even say a local charity event that your business may be passionate about.
Offers (Most Used)
Offer posts allow you to promote sales, coupons, discounts, or specials that your business is currently providing. You can even create an exclusive promotion just for your GMB listing if you wish. These posts include a bright yellow tag (on desktop and mobile search) that definitely draws a searchers eye.
Welcome Offer
The Welcome Offer is only visible to people who choose to “Follow” your business in the Google Maps app. Businesses can provide an exclusive offer, coupon, or freebie to new followers directly in the Google My Business App, so if you want to create a Welcome Offer you will need to download the app. Unlike the regular Offer Post type, this offer does not have a golden yellow tag.
Products (Products Post)
Product Posts are only available to businesses that have the Products feature. When you create a Product Post it does not go into your Post feed, but in your Products section on your Business Profile. Products encourage you to highlight specific merchandise or services that your business sells. These Post types even earn their own navigation heading in mobile search results. Every Product Post goes into your Products section and in addition to the CTA button they have a Call button as well that uses the listings Primary Phone Number.

What NOT to Do
- Don’t use commercial slang:
“BOGO: 50% off men’s sneakers.”
- Don’t use excessive exclamation marks or all caps:
“Crazy SALE today!!!”
- Don’t include more than one theme or offer in one communication:
“Half price coffee and tea from 3-6 PM on Fridays, and buy 6, get one free donut on weekdays.”
- Don’t craft a deal with too many exclusions:
“10% off new seasonal sandwiches. Not valid on lunch specials.”
Where to Get Images
If you don’t feel confident in the photos you’re taking of your actual business, then you can use some websites to get high quality photos.
Important: Using your own photos is always the best option. If you have location services switched on your phone – then all of the geo-data is automatically added when you take them.
If you’re not confident in your photos, or don’t like the way your business is presented – then this is actually a signal that you need to focus on improving your actual customer experience.
In the meantime, you can use the following websites to get photos:
Please make sure you modify the images using the photo optimization process.
Post Scheduling and Tools
Posting on Google My Business is a no-brainer for any local business that wants to stand out in Google search results. But because Google My Business posts expire after 7 days, it means that at least once a week, you have to remember to log back into Google My Business and post something again.
I recommend using Google to post and become familiar with it. Not using a scheduler.
Google My Business changes so often the online scheduler apps cannot keep up with the updates.
If you need to schedule, just make a separate calendar in Microsoft, Google or Apple that reminds you top post. Make it a habit!
However, if you would like to simplify, then you can use an online app like OneUp to create and schedule your posts.
Using OneUp to Schedule Your Post
OneUpApp.io is a social media scheduling tool that supports Google My Business, in addition to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Google+.
Cost: OneUp starts at $12/month for up to 3 social profiles, with a 7-day free trial.
Connecting your Google My Business account
When you sign up, you can connect your Google My Business account from the Accounts page in OneUp.

Schedule a post
Click Schedule a Post to either post now or schedule it for a future time. You can add text, a link, and an image.
Then add your Call-To-Action button and a link.

Here is what that post looks like on the Google search results page.

Set posts to automatically repeat
In addition to just scheduling posts, OneUp allows you to set Google My Business posts to automatically repeat at set intervals — such as once a week or once a month.
You can choose to have the post repeat indefinitely, or choose for it to stop after a certain date or number of times posted.
